The Grey Rhino of Cultural Risk: How to Recognize and Respond to It
Charles Follett
Principle | Business Ingenuity

Every organization has an overarching culture or “state of mind” that influences how business leaders communicate, behave, and make decisions that ultimately impact – positively or negatively – strategic performance. Additionally, sub-cultures often emerge that vary across different business units within the organization, creating elements of confusion and complexity that may impede success. Unfortunately for some organizations, challenges associated and triggered by the existing culture may represent one of the largest looming, but unrecognized risks that leaders may be failing to address – it’s the grey rhino staring right at them that they cannot see. In this session, Charlie Follett is going introduce us to the science on culture to help ERM leaders better understand what is meant by “culture”, its impact on performance, and tips on how to recognize and measure it. His insights will help ERM leaders engage others in determining whether culture may be an organization’s most important strategic risk to address.
