Risk Identification and Assessment

Analyzing Root Causes of Risks

Angela Hoon

Bonnie Hancock, Professor of Practice of the ERM Initiative at NC State University interviews Angela Hoon, Executive Director of Strategic Risk Management at General Motors about how her organization analyzes root causes of top risks in order to identify common triggers and points of interconnection.

Angela starts by describing why she thought it was so critical to analyze root causes to get an “interconnected view” of risks, and the techniques she uses to obtain that view. She then goes on to describe how she learned from early workshops and adapted the process to break down risks to gain greater insights.

Angela also offers advice on getting started on the process of identifying risk root causes and risk clusters and the value of focusing on the root causes of risks rather than just the symptoms of risks.
