Hurricane Helene Uncovers Vulnerabilities of Supply Chain Risk

Almost a week after the remnants of Hurricane Helene caused widespread flooding and destruction in multiple states, survivors remain isolated and in urgent need of help. The destruction of key roadways, especially in the southern Appalachians, has severely hindered the rapid distribution of aid. Rob Handfield, Poole College professor of Supply Chain Management at NC State, told NBC News the storm’s impact on supply chains is unprecedented for North Carolina.

“The hurricane has devastated parts of I-40 and I-26, major freight corridors,” Handfield said. “This disruption is affecting numerous organizations across the state, in addition to the communities who have lost homes and access to essential supplies.”
