Call for Papers

Risk Governance Research Symposium

May 13-14, 2025

NC State University Risk Governance Research Symposium

The ERM Initiative in the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce the call for papers for its Risk Governance Research Symposium to be held on May 13-14, 2025 in Raleigh, NC. The Symposium will assemble leading scholars for discussion and dialogue surrounding emerging research on risk governance topics.

AREAS OF FOCUS

The Symposium welcomes working papers focused on important risk governance issues to help advance enterprise-wide risk management practices and their integration with strategic planning and governance. We invite you to submit working papers for program consideration. Papers may come from a variety of disciplines and perspectives, and may be theoretical, archival or experimental in nature.

For example, working papers focused on challenges and opportunities surrounding the following are well suited for consideration:

  • Management and governance of specific types of risks (e.g., cyber risks, climate risk management, geopolitical risk management, strategic risk management, operational risk management, talent risk management, etc.),
  • Effects of regulatory and public policy actions (i.e., taxation, political pressures, etc.), both nationally and globally.
  • Measurement challenges of monitoring emerging risks, including capturing the cost and value of investing in risk management processes.
  • Integration of risk management and strategic planning, including viewing risks from an opportunity perspective.
  • Role of culture, human behavior, and business judgment decision making on the governance of risks.
  • Role of the board of directors, external auditors, and management (such as chief risk officers) in risk governance.
  • Implementation challenges and barriers to enhancing risk governance.
  • And others.

There is no single business discipline that does not have a role in risk governance.  As a result, Symposium organizers encourage submissions from different scholarly disciplines and research methods.

SYMPOSIUM FORMAT

The Symposium will consist of four research sessions centered around different risk governance themes. Each research session will begin with a risk governance practitioner who will expand on the research topic by providing real-world perspectives about challenges and opportunities organizations face in their risk governance efforts. Following that, each research session will feature 2-3 research working papers on that risk governance theme presented by one of the papers co-authors. Audience discussion will be a core part of each session.

The first day will conclude with a networking reception for participants and speakers to continue discussion and dialogue.
